The philosophy of Calcutta Rescue

Calcutta Rescue was conceived as a charitable and developmental support in aid of the poor and destitute in Calcutta, providing them with free care, education, training and medical services.

The organisation aims primarily to relieve suffering by responding to the immediate needs of the poor, as well as focussing on more long-term aid to make them more independent and able to meet their own needs. The beneficiaries are the most destitute regardless of age, sex, caste or religion.

Calcutta Rescue works with other governmental bodies and NGOs as often as possible.

Its objectives, according to the Calcutta Rescue charter drawn up in 1991, are as follows putting the emphasis on the most disadvantaged:

  • Improve levels of health
  • Improve levels of education
  • Improve salary potential and chances of finding jobs
  • Integrate marginalized people into society

When difficult choices have to be made with what to do with the limited funding allocations, the degree of gravity is conscientiously assessed along with the potential benefits. Aid work is done in zones where it is possible to monitor the results of services provided, even if the need is greater elsewhere. The level of participation of Calcutta Rescue is directly linked to its annual budget.
