Education is a springboard into the future Many poor children do not attend school. But without an education they have no chance of escaping a future of poverty. Calcutta Rescue works hard on parental awareness of the importance of education and the future of their children.
Calcutta Rescue has created an education structure especially adapted to the slum children. Children who have never been to school are taught the basics and how to behave at school in order to prepare them for the state school system that is very competitive in India. When they are ready they go to school in the morning but return in the afternoons to study with teachers at a Calcutta Rescue venue. The more academic ones can continue their studies at college or even at university and fees are covered by the NGO.
The youngsters can also choose to learn a trade such as weaving, taxi-driving, office employee or mobile phone repairer in one of the organisation’s learning centres. Giving them a chance to work is essential to making them independent.
